Although she had some pop hits in the 1950s, in her heart
Kay Starr has always been a jazz singer. This double CD features
Starr in an extensive series of radio transcriptions, backed by orchestras led by either
Buzz Adlam or Dave Matthews, or combos that include violinist
Joe Venuti and guitarist
Les Paul; unfortunately, the personnel is otherwise not known. The emphasis throughout is on the singer who is heard in her early prime on such numbers as "What Can I Say After I Say I'm Sorry," "Honeysuckle Rose," "There's a Lull in My Life," "Them There Eyes," "The Best Things in Life Are Free," and "Down Among the Sheltering Palms." This formerly rare material (which includes a few verbal introductions) is recommended. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
