album review

Graduation's pre-leak talk wasn't as substantive as it was with Kanye West's first two albums. As with just about any other artist's third album, it had to be expected. The College Dropout was one of the most anticipated debuts of the early 2000s, while Late Registration had people wondering why Kanye would feel the need to work so extensively with multi-instrumentalist rock producer Jon Brion (the J Dilla of the chamberlin) and whether or not Kanye's hubristic tendencies would get the better of it. With Graduation, there was Takashi Murakami's artwork, a silly first-week sales competition with the decreasingly relevant 50 Cent, and chatter about synthesizers running wild. That was about it, but it all seemed loud and prevalent, due in part to a lack of high-profile rap albums released in 2007. Graduation is neither as bold nor as scattered as The College Dropout, and it's neither as extroverted nor as sonically rich as Late Registration. Kanye still makes up for his shortcomings as an MC and lyricist by remaining charmingly clumsy, frequently dealing nonsense through suspect rhyme schemes: "I never be picture-perfect Beyoncé/Be light as Al B. or black as Chauncey/Remember him from Blackstreet, he was black as the street was/I never be laid-back as this beat was." The songs that are thematically distanced, introspective, and/or wary -- there are many of them -- are, in turn, made more palatable than insufferable. That his humor remains a constant is a crucial aspect of the album, especially considering that most other MCs would sound embittered and hostile if they were handling similar subjects, like haters new and old, being a braggart with a persistent underdog complex, getting wrapped up in spending and flaunting, and the many hassles of being a hedonist. Those who have admired Kanye as a sharp producer while detesting him as an inept MC might find the gleaming synth sprites, as heard most prominently throughout "Flashing Lights" and "Stronger," to be one of the most glaring deal-breakers in hip-hop history. Though the synthesizer use marks a clear, conscious diversion from Kanye's past productions, highlights like "I Wonder," "The Glory," and "Everything I Am" are deeply rooted in the Kanye of old, using nostalgia-inducing samples, elegant pianos and strings, and gospel choirs. So, no, he's not dreaming of fronting A Flock of Seagulls or joining Daft Punk. He's being his shrewd, occasionally foolish, and adventurous self. ~ Andy Kellman, All Music Guide

      • Kanye West's Graduation was almost guaranteed to platinum before it was even released.  Can't Tell Me Nothing topped the charts weeks before the album's actual released, and the album only picked up momentum afterwards.  As a whole, this is one of those albums one could just leave in the CD player and enjoy every song.  It starts off strong with Good Morning, a track that highlights Kanye's ability on the mic.  Stronger received a staggering amount of playtime on the air and in other media such as commercials and movie trailers.  Good Life (ft. T-Pain who seems to make an appearance on almost every new CD that comes out) is a catchy song and just has an overall uplifting feel.  Can't Tell Me Nothing is just a powerful song on its own merit (an alternate music video on youtube by Zack Galifianakis is absolutely worth a watch).  Flashing Lights and Homecoming bring about great closure to this solid album.  The extra track on this album, Bittersweet Poetry featuring John Mayer bears mentioning as its powerful lyrics and rich sound are a cannot miss.  With such a stong showing, one has to wonder did Kanye peak with this album or will his future releases fall short?

      • throw the word 'Classic' away too easily. This CD is far from classic. Don't get me wrong it's great, but it has its lows. C'mon 'Drunk & Hot Girls'? That song is garbage should have been cut from the CD. Lil' Wayne's verse is 'Barry Bonds' was weak and the beat was great either. 'Homecoming' was is just a recycled song. It was in a mixtape this version is a lot better though. Other than that this CD is great. Must have been in heavy rotation in my CD player for like a year. 4/5

      • Kanye...The Graduate

      • Kanye West has made it. He can truly be called hip-hop royalty. He's come from almost dying in a car accident to being called a hip-hop legend. MTV declared him one of the Top 10 Greatest MC's of OUR Time. Now, we can see why. He's given us nothing but raw talent on each of his albus which have gotten nothing but stellar reviews. The College Dropout (Parental Advisory) in my eyes was perfect on so many levels. It brought his realness out and showed the world that he wasn't just another rapper. He showed us he was just another broke dude from Chicago ready make his claim to fame. He followed up later with Late Registration (Parental Advisory) which showed us that he's moved up and is getting used to life in the media spotlight. Now, he's given us his third album, Graduation (Parental Advisory). All in all, it's a good album. The production was simply excellent and his flow was on point. You basically got everything you'd expect from a Kanye West album. Each track was awesome. From Good Morning to Big Brother you got nothing but raw Kanye. However, you could hear a slight maturity in his voice. Yeah, you got the usual "International Asshole" routine but he sounded more...GROWN UP. This album was amazing. Even the songs with featured artists were on point. He even had Chris Martin on one of his songs. CHRIS MARTIN! So in my book, it was a great album. My only problem with it was the length of it. It was shorter than his last two albums but that alone doesn't ruin the album. In my book, I give it a solid 5 out of 5 because it is truly a good album. <br/>-G. Oryan
