      • Texas native Johnny Cooper is not setting going to set the world on fire with his music by any means, but he is a breath of fresh air in a genre crowded with fluff. Copper’s blues meets country sound is country enough to win over country music lovers, while being just pop enough to sneak into some mainstream audience’s music collections. He could be the next big thing both regionally and nationally.
Cooper’s new album, Follow, shows off the young Texan’s musical versatility and vocal talent. Follow’s first track, “Don’t Feel Like That Anymore”, immediately got my attention. It’s a bluesy, organ backed, guitar riffin’ good time ready for radio. It pretty much sets the tone for what else you can expect on Follow for the most part.Follow does fall short when he tones the blues and rock down. Tracks like “Can’t Hold On To You” and “Try” sound more adult contemporary meets Jason Mraz. I guess that’s good if you’re a Mraz fan, but I much prefer something grittier with more of a blues or rock influence. These tracks are the pop element I referred to previously. There’s certainly an audience for this sort of stuff, so I can forgive him for going there I guess.
Johnny Cooper is at his best when he sticks to his blues-country sound. “Take Your Number” follows that same formula and is another stand out track on Follow. “Can’t Hold On To You” is the track that proves Cooper has soul…real soul. It sounds like something I’d hear walking by Antone’s or Momo’s and hear. For those outside of Austin, that’s a compliment for Cooper as both venues mentioned are known for showcasing great artists. Take my word and give Follow a listen.
