Sweeping away all the vocal clutter of the original, the instrumental version of
White People is a better deal for those who just want to get their groove on, but there's not enough manipulation to recommend it to those not seeking plain old backing tracks. Without the overly stuffed, so-hip-it-hurts guest list,
White People sounds more like a
Dan the Automator and
Prince Paul album than the final product, albeit an unfinished one.
Paul and
Dan's work is much easier to pick apart without the plentiful jibber-jabber on top of it, and their raw ideas pointed to a better album than the one delivered. Still, it's a by-the-numbers affair and some beats wear out their welcome with two or three minutes to go. Minus the skits and whatnot, the instrumental version runs only three minutes less than the original, five minutes over an hour. That's a long time to feed on loops and grooves, so skip to the end if you must. The closing "Runway Song, Pt. 2 (Kid Koala & DJ Shadow Ready for Their Close-Ups)" is everything that's fun and good about
the Handsome Boys. The smart and playful number brings to mind the benefits of single-track downloading, since the rest of the album is for one-of-everything fanatics and aspiring alternative rappers. ~ David Jeffries, All Music Guide
