album review
This first full-length album shows that if the sparkling consistency of Pollard's mid-'90s masterpieces was not yet present, the madcap songwriting sensibility and pop instinct of those albums certainly was. Pollard's melodies shine here, even in the band's embryonic stages. Whether on the garage ditty, "Hank's Little Fingers," or the slow-burning epic, "A Portrait Destroyed By Fire," despite its inconsistencies, Devil Between My Toes foreshadows the brilliant albums to come. ~ Brian Christopher Egan, All Music Guide
