album review

This compilation has 20 hits by the excellent, late singer. Her swinging samba renditions can be recalled through "O Bêbado E A Equilibrista," "Madalena," "O Mestre-sala Dos Mares," and "Canto de Ossanha" (with Toots Thielemans, in a jazzy rendition). Bossa nova can be found in "Aquarela do Brasil," "Nega do Cabelo Duro," and "Águas de Março" (with Tom Jobim, from the album Elis & Tom). Flower power nostalgia is the raw material for "Como Nossos Pais," "Casa No Campo" has bucolic intentions, just like "Romaria," while "Fascinação" is a somewhat kitschy old romantic valse taken from the seresta repertoire with all its grandiose images, while the option for kitsch was conscious in the boleros "Dois Pra lá, Dois Pra Cá" and "Me Deixas Louca." The festival years are recalled by the energetic "Louvação" (in a live 1966 recording, with Jair Rodrigues). The distinctive sound of Milton Nascimento's lively compositions is found in "Caxangá" and "Nada Será Como Antes." Finally, her extreme dramatic sensibility is brought by "Atrás da Porta." One of the best Regina compilations. ~ Alvaro Neder, All Music Guide
