The first in a series of EPs released during
Electric Wizard's three-year hiatus from serious recording (the band was pondering splitting up following the indifferent response toward its landmark second album,
Come My Fanatics...),
Chrono.Naut comprises a single drawn-out 16-minute excursion through the Dorset trio's spacy doom metal universe. Its relatively straightforward first half grinds away with the band's usual Stonehenge-sized riffing attack, while the second (entitled "Chrono.Naut Phase II (Chaos Revealed)") explores a much more laid-back, grooving jam approach rarely explored by the group before or since. All in all, nothing spectacular by
Wizard's inimitably high standards of "heavyosity," but well worth a listen for serious fans. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, All Music Guide
