album review

Time takes its cues more from such bands as the Alan Parsons Project and Wings than from Jeff Lynne's fascination with Pepper-era Beatles. Sure, all the electronic whirrs and bleeps are present and accounted for, and Time did spawn hit singles in "Hold on Tight" and "Twilight," but on the average, ELO had begun to get too stuck on the same structure and content of their releases. "The Way Life's Meant to Be" echoes very early ELO hits like "Can't Get It Out of My Head," and the "Prologue" and "Epilogue" segments try and bring about a unifying concept that doesn't quite hold up upon listening all the way through. Time proves to be competent ELO but not great ELO. [The 2001 CD reissue on Epic/Legacy adds three bonus tracks, all B-sides of singles: "The Bouncer," "When Time Stood Still," and "Julie Don't Live Here."] ~ James Chrispell, All Music Guide

      • Without a doubt my favorite album. It's so amazing. It mixes the Electric and Orchestra together so well.

      • Crowning Achievement

      • The Album "Time" Is By Far, the Crowing Achievement for E.L.O. . This Album joins the ranks of the truly Classic albums of the 1980's. It combines the very best of 2 generations together, the late 70s and early 80s in one album. Expressive in content, rhythm and effects, it is perfection at every turn.<br/>

      • Start to finish, ELO's best

      • I'm probably biased since this was the first LP I ever bought, but to me Time remains a towering achievement for ELO and wellspring of thought-provoking beauty for the rest of us. The electronic textures atop '50s rock structures nicely mirror the future-nostalgic tale of a man trapped in time with no way back to "the good old 1980s." There's longing throughout, but also a commitment to making great music (living as well as one can) in the here and now.
