album review

Danity Kane exist in a strange netherworld of pop culture, where you either know everything about the girl group or you know nothing about them. Despite debuting at the top of the Billboard charts with their eponymous 2006 debut, on its way to eventual platinum sales, the group didn't seem to make any impact outside of MTV, the place where their construction was meticulously, endlessly documented on the third season of Making the Band. The popularity of Making the Band 3 pushed Danity Kane into the Top Ten, and the very existence of a Making the Band 5 featuring DK and subsequent MTB winners Day 26 and Donnie J, all making albums at the same time and jockeying for success, no doubt gave hope to Danity Kane and their producers that the group's second album, Welcome to the Dollhouse, might also achieve a high chart placement. All five of the DK girls are conventionally pretty in their voices (not to mention their looks), and were picked for the group because they're pliable. Although they thoroughly disappear into these productions, dense on rhythms but lacking hooks, there are some notable tracks -- "2 of You" has slinky rhythms that make up for the nonsensical "you've got me having breakfast in the afternoon" refrain and "Lights Out" has an appealing dose of Minneapolis funk in its keyboard, as does "Key to My Heart," which shimmers slyly. Nevertheless, hearing Welcome to the Dollhouse will be most interesting if you've witnessed the labors on Making the Band. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

      • Welcome to the Dollhouse

      • During the show Making the Band 4, the always classy Aubrey O'Day voices that "we just want to make a good f*cking album." The "we" she is referring to is Diddy's creation Danity Kane. The phrase "Aubrey got her way" would be an understatement. Welcome to the Dollhouse does what most sophomore albums should do but don't: show a level of growth in the artist, take the listener to a place they've never been before, improve on errors made in the debut, and expand the artist fanbase. Welcome to the Dollhouse does all these and best of all it makes you want to DANCE.
The first time around Danity Kane didn't exactly "wow" us. I mean, "Show Stopper" is both funky and rough and "Ride for U" has an old-school quality to it. But both songs lacked depth and true emotion. On this disc the ladies... we to quote their mid-tempo jam: "take it further." There are few albums that i can listen to without pressing fast forward. While listening to Dollhouse I find myself pressing rewind and repeat more often than i should. This CD is absolutely addictive and the group shows collective growth and potential for an even better 3rd album.
To sum things up, the disc is by no means "perfect." But it gets close enough to make us happy.

Here's my ratings for the songs:

5 Stars-
Key to my Heart
Poetry
Damaged
Ecstacy
Sucka For Love
2 of You

4 Stars-
Pretty Boy
Strip Tease
Ain't Going
Is Anybody Listening

3 Stars-
Bad Girl
Lights Out

P.S. The interludes on the disc are worth a listen ,too. i only wish they would have been made full songs.
