Well the CD is ok at best. Its catchy as hell but it doenst have the artsy feel and sound that Downtown Battle Mountain or Whatever I Say Is Royal Ocean had at all. The drumming has gone from complex double bass pedal to single bass pedal which made it lose some of its groove and well intensity. The guitar doesn't sound as breath taking and sounds like it got replaced by some Adult-Alt band that all the little girls like because MTV showed a 30 sec clip of their video during commercials. lol ok maybe I went to far on that one but still. And of course worst of all is the fact that NEITHER Jonny Craig or Jon Mess are in DGD anymore. What the hell man! That must mean that the next CD is probably gonna be some failed attempt at reclaiming past glory. Its like shooting a dog in the head and hoping he lives. If I were Matt or Will I'd ditch the decaying tragedy that is Dance Gavin Dance and start a new band with fresh hope and a fresh start instead of going through the remains of something that is probably going to die soon.
Now don't get me wrong, jonny craig is the best and will hold that title, but Kurt did a great job on this album as his first effort. All you have to do is stop looking at it as the old Dance Gavin Dance, or just stop looking at it as the old DGD completely(it works for me)
Aside from all the bad press, I really like this cd. I mean the tracks on here are unforgettable: Rock Solid, Buffalo, Hot Water On Wool, Burning Down The Nicotine Armoire Pt. 2, and People You Know are just a taste.
I love the fact that Jon Mess gets more time on this cd, his screaming is what saved the band for me, without him the band will truly not sound the same. And now with their 4th album in view Im very curious what they'll come up with. Much love to DGD-Mace
I think that what Dance Gavin Dance has done without Johnny is an amazing accomplishment, alongside a few setbacks, including having an extended overall time of instrument solos taking place, the useless screaming in People You Know, and more unsaid examples. Kurt is a great singer, but not as magnificent as Johnny is. The songs that were written were balanced and known with Kurt, although the lyrics that Johnny was given had no relationship to his own skills at all, so he made it work with whatever he had, and he obliterated the songs into chains of titanium. I think that they were better off with Johnny physically, basically.
I have to say this was a dissapointment. With Johnny leaving, the band has def taken a slide back. Yes there are a few good songs on this album but the magic is gone, the distinctive sound DGD had with Johnny is now gone. The new vocalist is good, I'm not taking that away but its just not as good. The writing in this album is way under par, a couple of the songs they just scream profanity, no music and dead space between the words, doesnt sound good at all.
If your looking for an album that continues what Downtown Battle Mountain was you wont find it here. Johnny took a lot with him when he left the band, unfortunately his new one isnt much better. If you like sub par writing and pointless profanity with music that takes a couple listens then this will tide you over for a while.
I swear this is dance gavin dance's third album, since the release of Downtown Battle Mountain and Whatever I Say Is Royal Ocean.
True Amazing songs on the album like "alex english" "caviar" "Rock Solid" etc. even though Johnny Craig [former singer of DGD][Now in Emarosa(check them out aswell)] the band still pulls through with an Amazing Album! how do i know this? because i personally went to see them perform a few songs off their album in Anaheim California July 5 2008.
