album review

Released as part of a Viva la Vida special edition and on its own as an EP -- thereby illustrating a concern for fans that's almost unheard of among these big-budget special editions -- Prospekt's March is an addendum to Coldplay's Eno-produced 2008 album, offering a little bit more of the same spacy thing. Often, it's a variation on what was on the album itself, as three of the eight songs here are remixes, none particularly different than the originals (not even Jay-Z's cameo on "Lost" feels sudden or surprising). Of those other five songs, "Postcards from Far Away" is just a small snippet of atmospheric keyboard, leaving this at a mere four tracks -- all good, all holding their own with the main text of Viva la Vida. Best of these is the surging drama of "Glass of Water," which feels as if it could have fit neatly into the album itself, but "Rainy Day" has a nice percolating electronic beat along with simpatico staccato strings, and "Prospekt's March/Poppyfields" earns much of its portentousness through its latter section, all of which makes up for the slightly unfinished feel of "Now My Feet Won't Touch the Ground." None of this is major but it is enjoyable, worthwhile for the devoted -- and it's nice they can get it separately instead of plunking down cash yet again for a deluxe edition. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

      • What would you expect?

      • The songs are not bad. However, if you are looking for the same type of flavor that Viva la Vida brought to the table, you are going to have to look elsewhere.

While Life in Technicolor II is really cool, in my opinion better than the VLV version beause of the lyrics to tie it together, and Lost+ w Jay-z brings a sort of different and welcome new swing to the song.

But, there is a reason that some of the other songs were put out on this EP and not VLV, because they were just mediocre. Not much more than that.

Overall, its good for an EP, but its not Viva La Vida.

      • For all of us who enjoy Coldplay's latest studio album, it's great to find the band had some extra to give us. Viva's unique direction must have sparked a lot of creativity. There are five new songs here, and really only one dud.

The highlight has to be Life In Technicolor ii, which fills out that great but too-short instrumental from the album, into a fine song. I really like the way the energetic beat from the original piece melds so well with the song proper. Not to be missed.

Glass of Water is good, and Rainy Day also has its high points - both do have a slightly unpolished feel, but nothing too bad, and it doesn't jar with the overall sound of the album(s) at all.

"Lost+" is absurd... it sounded too much like my computer was playing two song files at the same time, just a bit of off-topic rapping in the middle of "Lost" untouched from its album sound. Who's idea was this to include it on the EP? Ah well, that's why it's an EP.

The other songs are slower, more introspective, but definitely worth listening to. As a whole, a good thing made even better.
