album review

A compilation of singles and tracks from Cloudberry Jam's first two albums, 1995's Blank Paycheck and 1996's Providing the Atmosphere, 1997's Going Further is probably inessential to anyone who already has the two original albums. (The six songs from Blank Paycheck are remixed, but not drastically.) However, newcomers to the Swedish popsters' smooth, sophisticated pop might want to start here, because both Blank Paycheck and Providing the Atmosphere are rather uneven records and Going Further eliminates the failed experiments and dead wood. The Linnkoping-based quintet specializes in a stylish blend of Europop hooks, mild jazz influences, Stereolab-y vintage synth accents, and the sort of urbane but slightly twee charm the Cardigans had on their first couple of albums. Singer Jennie Medin is often supported by creamy-smooth harmonies from guitarist Jorgen Warnstrom and keyboardist Henrik Sundqvist, and the arrangements tend to feature funky Hammond organ and Bacharach-style muted trumpets along with occasional orchestral shadings. The songs, unfortunately, tend to slide by on the cool sounds; only a few, most notably the slinky "Nothing to Declare," have melodies memorable enough to stand out from the pack. ~ Stewart Mason, All Music Guide
