Acoustico MTV, containing some of
Cidade Negra's biggest hits up to 2002, works quite well as a greatest-hits compilation of the band's previous work. Artistically though, it is hard to justify this release, as the difference between the live versions presented here and the original studio versions is marginal. Apart from the old hits, there is a reggae version of
Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode" with Portuguese lyrics, and a small guest performance by a seemingly uninspired
Gilberto Gil on "Extra" (a song composed by
Gil himself). Perhaps somewhat unexpected is the absence of "Doutor," one of
Cidade Negra's most catchy and popular songs. These are the only "surprises" on this hits cavalcade from Brazil's best-selling reggae act. ~ Philip Jandovský, All Music Guide
