album review
Probably the most adventurous disc of Blind Guardian's career (and that's saying something with this troupe), A Night at the Opera lives up to its name by channeling Queen's most symphonic arias through a dynamic prog metal background that makes Fate's Warning's most complex licks seem positively pedestrian in comparison with a glorious production that allows every nuance to literally explode from the loudspeakers. ~ Brian O'Neill, All Music Guide

Fans of Blind Guardian are still deeply conflicted over this album. Did it stray too far from their original style? Was it a bad choice to favor the dramatic orchestral parts over the traditional guitar riffs? We likely won't come to a conclusion anytime soon. However, I can say without a doubt, this is some of Guardian's best work.
This album has two memorable power anthems in particular. Battlefield and The Soulforged. Few songs have the same power as Battlefield. With Hansi's multi-layered vocal tracks, it captures well the tumultuous aura of a chaotic battlefield. This style of vocals, Hansi backed by Hansi backed by the choir are a staple of the album, and while some fans will tell you its overdone, I'll righteously defend it as the definitive style of this highly evocative album.
If I'm going to talk about specific tracks, I have to talk about And Then There Was SIlence. This 14 minute epic about the Trojan War could easily be called Blind Guardian's Magnum Opus, their greatest work. This track's vocal work is what makes it truly stand out; Hansi and his choir regale us with another masterfully woven tale, engufling us in a sea of melodies. On top of that, the orchestra and the guitars find an amazing balance that only further establishes what we knew all along: Blind Guardian can do no wrong.
